We Need Your Help

Many of our clients are either unemployed or underemployed. Although this is not a requirement for our services, for many of our folks, we are an affordable option to receive quality services. Each person who pays a co-pay based on their household size and income leaves us with a deficit that we try to make up through grants, allocations, and personal donations. Given this fact, financial donations at any level are greatly appreciated and help cover the expense associated with high quality counseling services.

Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes that they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:
  • To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  • To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  • To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  • To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  • To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  • To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

NAP Tax Credits

Did you know that your tax deductible donation to Headwaters Counseling may qualify for a tax credit on your Indiana state tax return?
Headwaters Counseling (a dba of Family and Children’s Services) has been awarded tax credits as part of the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) to benefit our counseling programs.

For every dollar you donate under this program to Headwaters Counseling ($100 minimum), you will receive 50 percent of your contribution as a direct tax credit on your Indiana state income tax return. Unlike a federal tax deduction, these credits can be applied to your Indiana state tax liability.

Additionally, because Headwaters Counseling is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, any contribution to Headwaters Counseling may also be taken as a federal tax deduction (consult your tax advisor for advice about your particular situation).

Tax credits are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

This is a wonderful opportunity to help support the programs of Headwaters Counseling and to get a real tax savings in the process.

Giving Through the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne

One can give to Headwaters Counseling through the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, and the Foundation will also donate a 20% match. The money is placed into our account where the principal is used to generate interest. We have historically let the interest stay in the account in an effort to increase the value of the account.

A goal is to be able to, at some point in the future, budget the interest from this account to be a significant and stable fund to help us carry out our mission. We recognize that every single donation, no matter the size, moves us in this direction.

Donations can be sent directly to the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne with a letter designating Family & Children’s Services, Inc. dba Headwaters Counseling, or simply put our name on the memo line of the check to designate what fund they will deposit the donation to.

Donations can also be sent directly to Headwaters Counseling. Donations designated to our fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne will be forwarded.

Many people are finding that in addition to their normal charitable giving, donations to help their targeted organizations in the future are extremely beneficial.
Have you considered a charitable annuity? A charitable annuity is a contract between you and the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, who processes annuities for us. You make a gift to the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, and the Foundation will pay you a guaranteed income – an annuity – for as long as you live. At the termination of the annuity, the remaining assets go the (Headwaters Counseling) Family & Children’s Services Endowment Fund.

With a gift annuity, not only do you receive an income stream guaranteed by all of the assets of Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, but you can also claim a charitable deduction for part of the value of the assets given. If you give appreciated assets, the capital gain is partially avoided and partially spread out over your life expectancy. A portion of the payments you receive may also be tax-free.

Many of us are unaware of the benefits of making a charitable gift in a will. But such planned gifts can enable you to continue to help people in need or support a cause close to your heart after you’re gone.

If you have questions about this process, you can call your attorney; or if you are interested call the Community Foundation at 260.426.4083.
