Headwaters Counseling CEO and Executive Director of 22 Years Announces Resignation

FORT WAYNE, IND - Today, Headwaters Counseling’s CEO and Executive Director, Stephen Jarrell, announced his plan to step down from his leadership position as of December 31st. Since 1998, Jarrell has been an invaluable part of the Headwaters Counseling team, serving as Executive Director since 2001.

“The past 25-plus years have been some of the most valued years of my life. During this time I have had the opportunity to personally provide individual, family and group therapy in addition to crisis incident responses. We have also expanded our substance misuse services exponentially in response to our community’s needs. When I came here, I was immediately attracted to the compassionate and caring client-centered approach. Over a quarter of a century later we still prioritize this tenet.”

In addition to providing general counseling, employee assistance programs and expanding offerings to include substance abuse programs, during Jarrell’s tenure, Headwaters Counseling’s services have grown from about 450 services per month to over 1100.

Current Associate Director and COO, Vanessa Jones, will be stepping into the Executive Director and CEO position effective January 1st. Jones has been a part of Headwaters Counseling since 2010, where she started as a therapist before being promoted to director of clinical services in Oct. 2018 and Associate Director and COO in 2021.

“It’s been an honor to learn from Stephen these past 13 years and watch him lead and encourage Headwaters Counsleing’s staff to become the best versions of themselves,” said Jones. “As I step into this position, I will honor the precedent that Stephen has set and continue to cultivate a work environment and counseling practice that allows everyone to find their voice.”

To celebrate Jarrell’s retirement and Jones’ new position, Headwaters Counseling is inviting anyone impacted by Jarrell’s mentorship and leadership to donate $25 in honor of his 25 years of service. All donations can be made on
our website.
