Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Different people need different solutions. That’s why a variety of therapy types exist. CBT and DBT are common examples. They may sound similar, but the differences between the two are important.

What Is CBT Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is commonly referred to as talk therapy. It involves an ongoing dialogue between you and your therapist.

The goal is to identify both obstacles in your life as well as any inaccurate/negative thinking surrounding those issues. How you think influences how you act, so changing your thought process can truly improve your life.

Making progress requires you to be vulnerable and transparent with your therapist. This can be challenging for many people. Be patient with yourself. That trust develops over time.

CBT can be used to help you
address obstacles such as:

  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Addiction

It’s also common for CBT to be paired with other types of therapy and/or medication.

What Is DBT Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is not an entirely different approach to therapy. It’s actually a modified variation of CBT. However, the two feature key differences. Instead of addressing thought patterns, DBT helps you live in the present.

This is also referred to as developing mindfulness. Instead of allowing your feelings to get the best of you in a given moment, DBT can help you regulate those emotions. By working with your therapist, you can begin to learn how to slow down, allowing you to react in a more positive way.

This type of therapy has its roots in assisting people who have Borderline Personality Disorder. However, the practice has since been adapted to help
a wider group of individuals, including those with:

  • OCD
  • ADHD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GED)
